Here is the very first article I wrote for the Mountain Eagle/Windham Weekly. You can't beat Fred's Phoenicia Barbershop for a good cut and good conversation, along with a trip back down memory lane. The Barber of Phoenicia There are famous barbers in literature the Barber of Seville and the notorious Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Fred Veitch, the owner of P...hoenicia Barber Shop, may one day be as well-known as this pair. Fred opened his establishment in June of 2017 after operating a barber shop in Long Island for seventeen years. He and his son, Joey do men’s and boys’ haircuts, shaves and will even cut women’s hair. [Sadly, Fred’s son was the victim of a homicide in November of 2017] Just don’t ask for a fancy do or a blow dry. Fred and his wife, Pam, relocated to this area because, in his words, I love the Catskills. His son, Joey soon followed. Later, his daughter, Samantha and her fiancé, Matt made the move. Matt launched a business in Phoenicia, also Matt Fitzpatrick Masonry. Fred hopes to bring his other two sons, CJ and Zach, to this region. Currently, they are partners in Greenlawn Delicatessen on Long Island, a business that Fred started four years ago. Fred got into barbering eighteen years ago after a career in the restaurant business. He had previously owned several pizza shops and a couple of Mexican restaurants. I needed change, so I put myself through barber school. A year after I completed my training I bought a barber shop. Why switch from making pizzas to cutting hair? I always enjoyed the people. The barbershop offered me great people, great stories, great friends and got me out of the kitchens. I was seeking a simpler life. When you visit Phoenicia Barber Shop, not only will you get a great haircut at a terrific price, but you will get fast, friendly service. Plus you’ll be able to see Fred’s collection of 1960’s memorabilia old license plates, vintage editions of Life Magazine and even a working antique cash register. When asked if he specialized in anything particular, Fred said tonsorial perfection. A quick Google search came up with this interesting information. The word tonsorial from tonsus refers to shearing and dates back to the 1600’s, but barbers have been around much longer than that. Their establishments were called tonsorial parlors. Barbers used to pull teeth and operate on people, hence the red and white pole - the red symbolizing blood, which I’m sure there was plenty of. Fred does not plan on doing any teeth pulling or surgery. Just good old-fashioned haircuts and plenty of good conversation. Phoenicia Barber Shop is located on Main Street in Phoenicia across from Valero. He’s open 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For more information call 845-688-3187. See more

Besides selling advertising for this great newspaper, I occasionally write articles and do public speaking. It was almost two years ago that I had the pleasure of meeting a great group of veterans and their spouses. Sue Whitlow, a Marine Corps veteran invited me to speak at the Mountaintop Detachment 1274 of the Marine Corps League's annual Birthday dinner on November 10, 2018. I read excerpts from my book "Ordinary Heroes Anecdotes of Veterans. https://www.amazon.com/Ordina...ry-Heroes-Anecdo//ref=sr_1_1 These folks gave me a fantastic reception. Here's a copy of the article I wrote about this. Marine Corps League Holds its Annual Dinner and Dance On Saturday, November 10, Mountaintop Detachment 1274 of the Marine Corps League held a dinner and dance to celebrate the 243rd birthday of the Marines. It was also the 100th anniversary of women being admitted into the Marine Corps. The event was held at the East Durham Fire Company building. Cathy Hewitt was in charge of all the arrangements. Catherine Huber led in the singing of the National Anthem and Jim Scarey, chaplain of the detachment, gave the invocation. Sue Whitlow, a former Marine gave a POW-MIA remembrance and explained the significance of the items found on the POW-MIA table. Joe Huber, detachment Commandant, made some opening remarks and introduced Marine Second Lieutenant Miguel Pinto, from Windham. Pinto has just graduated from Quantico and will be leaving the area for further training in a few days. Hors d’oeuvres were served and everyone feasted on a delicious buffet. After dinner the ceremonial cake was cut with a Mameluke sword, a traditional Marine Corps saber. The oldest Marine in attendance Pete Manfredi, a Korean War veteran, and the two youngest Marines, Bob Cross and Sue Whitlow were served the first pieces of the cake. Joe D’Acunto, an ex-Marine was the DJ. He played a selection of patriotic songs and tunes from the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s up to the present. Local author Sarah J. Nachin gave a short presentation about her book, Ordinary Heroes, Anecdotes of Veterans. This book is a collection of interviews she conducted with veterans from all branches of the military. At the end of her talk Nachin asked for volunteers that she could interview for the sequel to her book that she is working on. The Marine Corps League Mountaintop Detachment 1274 meets monthly at the East Durham Fire Department on Route 145. Membership is open to all current and former Marines. In addition to providing a means for veterans to get together socially, the Marine Corps League gives support to veterans and performs community service, such as the Toys for Tots program at Christmas.
